Background of the Study
Counter-terrorism investigations require precise and multifaceted forensic analyses to dismantle complex criminal networks and verify identities in high-risk situations. In Ijebu East Local Government Area, Ogun State, forensic anthropology has increasingly contributed to counter-terrorism efforts by offering methods to identify victims and perpetrators in explosive and arson-related incidents (Ajayi, 2023). Techniques such as skeletal trauma analysis, dental profiling, and DNA extraction are critical for establishing links between remains and criminal activities (Ogunyemi, 2024). The integration of forensic anthropology with other investigative disciplines has enhanced the overall capability of counter-terrorism units to resolve cases and secure evidence (Balogun, 2025). This study examines the specific contributions of forensic anthropology within counter-terrorism contexts, evaluating its impact on case resolution and legal outcomes. By scrutinizing both technological advancements and methodological challenges, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for integrating forensic anthropology more effectively into counter-terrorism strategies.
Statement of the Problem
In Ijebu East, the use of forensic anthropology in counter-terrorism is impeded by challenges such as limited expertise, rapid scene degradation, and the complex nature of terror-related injuries (Balogun, 2025). These factors contribute to difficulties in accurate victim and perpetrator identification, which in turn affect case resolution and judicial processes. This study aims to pinpoint these challenges and propose methodological enhancements to strengthen the integration of forensic anthropology into counter-terrorism investigations (Ajayi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the role of forensic anthropology in counter-terrorism investigations.
To identify challenges affecting forensic evidence recovery in terror incidents.
To propose enhancements for integrating forensic anthropology into counter-terrorism strategies.
Research Questions:
How does forensic anthropology contribute to counter-terrorism investigations?
What challenges impede effective forensic analysis in terror-related incidents?
What improvements can optimize the role of forensic anthropology in these investigations?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Forensic anthropological techniques significantly enhance counter-terrorism investigations.
H2: Limited expertise and rapid scene degradation negatively affect forensic outcomes.
H3: Integration of multidisciplinary forensic approaches improves evidence recovery in terror cases.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it informs counter-terrorism strategies by critically evaluating the contributions of forensic anthropology. Its findings will support forensic experts and security agencies in refining investigation protocols, enhancing evidence recovery, and improving legal outcomes. The research contributes to more effective counter-terrorism operations and heightened public security (Ogunyemi, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the role of forensic anthropology in counter-terrorism investigations in Ijebu East Local Government Area, Ogun State. It does not consider other forensic disciplines involved in counter-terrorism.
Definitions of Terms:
Counter-Terrorism: Measures and investigations aimed at preventing or responding to terrorist activities.
Explosive Injuries: Trauma resulting from explosive devices.
Forensic Anthropology: The use of anthropological techniques to aid legal investigations.
